Hello, my name is ___________, and I am a compulsive debtor (or other label). Welcome to the Visions Meeting of Debtors Anonymous. After a moment of silence, please join me in saying the Serenity Prayer.
God, grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can and the Wisdom to know the difference.
Preamble/Welcome to Debtors Anonymous
Debtors Anonymous offers hope for people whose use of unsecured debt causes problems and suffering. We come to learn that compulsive debting is a spiritual problem with a spiritual solution, and we find relief by working the DA recovery program based on the Twelve Step principles.
The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop incurring unsecured debt. Even if members are not in debt, they are welcome in DA. Our Fellowship is supported solely through contributions made by members; there are no dues or fees.
Debtors anonymous is not affiliated with any financial, legal, political, or religious entities, and we avoid controversy by not discussing outside issues. By sharing our experience, strength, and hope and by carrying the message to those who still suffer, we find joy, clarity, and serenity as we recover together.
Let’s introduce ourselves by first name only. If you are a newcomer or out-of-towner, please introduce yourself so we can welcome you. Please silence your cell phone. (If there are newcomers, the Chairperson will read “A Word to Newcomers”)
A Word to Newcomers
Welcome to Debtors Anonymous! Here you can find a new way of living that offers recovery from compulsive debting and hope for a healthier, happier, more prosperous life. We suggest that you keep an open mind and attend at least six meetings as soon as possible, to have time to identify with the speakers and to absorb the DA concepts. The important thing is to keep coming back. If you think DA is for you, you can arrange to have your first pressure relief meeting
This meeting focuses specifically on Visions. We have found that to realize our visions, we must first abstain from incurring new unsecured debt, and work the 12 steps of DA. This meeting is considered a supplement to regular DA meetings. To make the most of the Vision meeting, members are encouraged to attend regular DA meetings, to find a sponsor, use the tools and work the steps.
The issues of a beginner in the DA program are best addressed in regular DA meetings. But you are welcome here. May we have a volunteer to meet with newcomers after the meeting.
May I please have a volunteer to read ‘The 12 Steps of Debtors Anonymous’?
Now we will read from the Visions pamphlet of DA. Please read 1 or 2 paragraphs and pass the Visions pamphlet to the next person.
We will spend about 15 minutes writing about our Vision. Our vision pamphlet states that to achieve our Visions (missions, goals or dreams) we must first be abstinent and work the 12 steps. We will write until approximately ______ .
- State a Vision, a Mission a Goal or a Dream.
- Step-Focus Approach: Starting with Step 1, we ask ourselves a question relating to each step regarding the vision. Try to answer quickly. Whatever stops or blocks us is the step to write about in terms of the vision. (See Writing Buide-12 Step Approach)
- Another Approach: Write about your Vision as if it has already come to pass. This could be a 24-hour goal, a 5-year goal, or anything in between. (See chart for ideas)
DA or AA literature may be helpful in this effort.
Silent Prayer Time
We will now spend 1 – 2 minutes in silent prayer time.
We will now spend the remaining minutes sharing about our visioning experience until 11:30 about 5 minutes prior to the ending time.
In some groups, the speaker may respond to someone sharing from the group. However, in DA we do not engage in crosstalk (members interrupting or directly addressing another sharer) unless the speaker specifically asks for feedback. Each person is invited to state what kind of support he or she would like. This may be prayers, feedback, a separate Pressure Relief Group, a share from other members who may have specific experience in a certain area or other types of support. Please keep any feedback brief.
Are there any DA related announcements?
Our 7th tradition states that we have no dues or fees; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. You need not contribute at this time. Keep in mind that our groups monthly expenses are rent to the building. The suggested contribution is $2-$5. However, if you cannot contribute at this time, please keep coming back.
7th Tradition Voluntary Donations may be mailed to the address listed on the prosperityintergroup.org website. Dallas local intergroup also accepts Pay Pal at firstname.lastname@example.org .
